Bad topic subscription attemts

As a result of the outage I have been watching the logs and see a lot of people trying to subscribe to topics like

$SYS/broker/connection/core-mosquitto.glowmqtt1/state

rather than

SMART/HILD/${MAC}

Given the issue is widespread I imagine it is an HA library that has been broken - does anyone have an idea what it might be.
